Piracicaba, 05 – Large-sized processors from São Paulo State have indicated the possibility of receiving a larger volume of mid-season fruits (from contracts regarding the 2017/18 crop) in July, according to Cepea collaborators. In June, processors crushed only early oranges, their own or purchased through contracts. As for pear oranges, at first, only mature fruits that could not stay on trees were being received.

Therefore, although early oranges might continue to account for most oranges received, the share of mid-season fruits should gradually increase. The volume of this variety, however, should be low, mainly because maturation is out of the ideal period. According to agents from processors, even some early oranges are out of the desired pattern for juice production, reducing quality of the final product. Thus, processors have been more careful regarding fruit selection. In many cases, fruits that do not fit the standards demanded by processors are being rejected.

Besides, there are no juice stocks from the 2016/17 season. Ending stocks are usually used in blends with juice from the new crop, since quality oscillations are very common at the beginning of crushing.

So far, 10 plants of the large-sized processors have been crushing. However, although activities increased in June, purchases in the spot market were occasional, according to agents. As processors still had some volumes of their own fruits, they did not purchase significant amounts of fruits from growers.

The remuneration of the large-sized processors in the spot market was between 18.00 BRL and 20.00 BRL per box for the mid-season fruits, and between 16.00 BRL and 18.00 BRL per box for the early fruits. At the small-sized processors, prices were around 18.00 BRL per box, mostly with no difference among the varieties.

For July, agents from the sector expect that larger volumes of pear oranges received by processors, although from contracts, will reduce the amount in the in natura market, pushing up quotes. According to collaborators, as the volume of early oranges decreased in the in natura market in June, the demand for pear oranges increased late in the month, avoiding sharper price drops.

Besides, rains in May ended up delaying maturation of fruits at groves, controlling supply from the second fortnight of June onward. In June, pear orange quotes averaged 17.14 BRL per 40.8-kilo box, on tree, 19% down compared to the average in May.
