WATERMELON/CEPEA: Prices dropped in May, but profitability remained positive See photos

Piracicaba, 31 – Watermelon princes fell sharply in Uruana (Goias state) in May. The quotes were pressured down mainly by low temperatures this month, that discouraged fruit consumption.

Despite this scenario, producer’s profitability remained positive:  watermelon (>12 kg) had an average price of BRL 0,81 per kg, 20% lower than in April, but still 156% above cost. The positive margin was due to low supply in the period. According to Hortifruti/Cepea collaborators, harvest will continue at a low pace until July, what may contribute to positive results on the coming weeks.
