ONION/CEPEA: South season is coming to and end and price are high See photos

Piracicaba, 30th - Onion quotes remained high last weeks, due to low national supply. The reason is the finalization of South season - now only 10% of total production is available in the market. The forecast is that until the end of April all volume in Ituporanga and Lebon Regis (Santa Catarina state) will be finished.

Producers from Northeast advanced harvesting this 2019 season, and supply should raise this month. However, climate conditions damaged productivity in Irecê (Bahia state) and Vale do São Francisco (Bahia and Pernambuco states), reducing the expected volume for this period. Besides that, heavy rain interrupted the work in the field.

Traditionally, Brazilian market needs to import onion from Argentina in the period between seasons. This year, the import volume is bigger, according Secex data, and of good quality.

Even with the beginning of Northeast season and higher imports from Argentina, prices are still good for producers. Quotes in Ituporanga (Santa Catarina state) last week closed at BRL XX.XX per box of 20 kg, ensuring good profitability. For the next following, prices may reduce, considering harvest intensification in Northeast and Argentina’s onion imports.
