ONION/CEPEA: September starts with raising prices See photos

Piracicaba, 10th - Last week (August 31st to September 4th), the reduction of national supply contributed to raise onion prices in São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Goiás states. The most expressive reaction was in Monte Alto (São Paulo state), prices doubled (+111,3%) in relation to the previous week. In Cristalina (Goiás state) and Triangulo Mineiro region, quotes closed at BRL 47.92 and BRL 48.00 per box of 20 kilograms, an increase of 71% and 73%, respectively.

This scenario was influenced by the period of the final stage of harvest in São Paulo state with only 10% of total area available until the end of September. The volume in Minas Gerais and Goiás states also had a significant reduction due to early harvest between June and August.

New reactions in prices are not expected in the coming weeks, but lower supply in São Paulo and Minas Gerais might sustain quotes in September. In Cristalina, some producers are in harvest interruption until September 9th and this movement tends to increase onion supply, however, the volume in this region may not be high.
