ONION/CEPEA: Northeast starts season 2019 harvest See photos

Piracicaba, 21st - The harvest of onion season 2019 in Irecê (Bahia state) and Vale do São Francisco (Bahia and Pernambuco states) is just about to start earlier than usual.

Since low supply was expected in the 1st semester, producers started planting between October and November 2018, though the plantation of onions in Northeast usually starts in January. The production expected is good, but the productivity will be affected in relation to the potential of the region.

National supply tends to increase in March and April, considering the intensification of harvesting in Northeast. The national volume at the moment is reduced and price is above production costs in South of Brazil, the main producer region now.

Therefore, higher volume may limit onion quotes in the coming weeks. At the same time, supply has dropped in the South, due to incidence of fungus and bacterial diseases. So, profitability may continue positive to onion producers.
