Piracicaba, 20th – Onion prices decreased all over Brazil last week (July 9th to 13th), due to an increase in supply in the main onion producing regions. Santa Juliana (Minas Gerais state) and Cristalina (Goiás state) are the major contributors to high supply. Because of this scenario, low prices are expected this period of the year considering good weather conditions and harvest concentration.

In Triângulo Mineiro (Minas Gerais state), onion was sold by BRL 18.57/box of 20 kg last week, a reduction of 18.5% in relation to the week before. In Irecê (Bahia state), prices dropped by 30% in the same comparison, closing at BRL 0.56 per kilogram. Onion harvest in Bahia is finishing, as result of the end of first semester season. Even so, prices may still recude in the second half of July: São Paulo regions will intensify harvest in the coming weeks, and the peak of supply is expected in August.
