Piracicaba, 03rd - Planning for the coming melon season shall initiate in Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states in May. The first contracts are been made with importers, mainly European ones. At first, melon area in 2018/19 tends to be the same of 2017/18 season.
In May, producers are preparing the soil for planting, ensuring that harvest schedule shall initiate between July and August, when exports also begin. Current rain is helping in soil preparation, but, at the same time, this climate impacts in a smaller area for counter-season.
Although the rain is a source of encouragement to producers, the water in Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states is still limited, especially due to salinization of water - thus, this scenario may continue as an obstacle in 2018/19 season.
