ONION/CEPEA: Low supply leads to high prices See photos

Piracicaba, 15 - In April, onion prices went up significantly in relation to March. The reason to valuation changes in onion price is low national production during the counter-season. The commercialization in Santa Catarina state finished last week (May, 7th to 11th) and other producing regions intend to start harvest by the end of May.

Therefore, Brazilian onion production is not sufficient to supply national demand. To complement the supply, importers are bringing in onion from Argentina and Europe. In April, onion quotes in Ituporanga (Santa Catarina state) increased 84% compared to March, closing at 2,15 BRL per kilo. The forecast is high prices, due to low volume of onion, until the end of the month.
