BANANA/CEPEA: Exports drop 64% between January and July See photos

Piracicaba, 1st - Banana exports are retracted in 2017 and shall finish lower than the previous year. The coming months, supply can decrease in exporter regions, mainly nanica variety – the most exported one. Therefore, prices may be better in national market, which might control international sales due to the attractiveness of domestic market. The drop of exports in mid-year, however, was strong even with low prices in Brazil. Lower quality in comparison to the main international banana players pressured exports. From January to July, the decline was significant – considering the five largest buyers, the lowest drop compared to the same period of 2016 was 51% for Uruguay, according to Secex data. In the sum of these months, exports added up 19 thousands of tones, fall of 64% compared to the same period of last year.
